Ecole Doctorale 474 - Frontière de l'Innovation en Recherche et Education

Domaine : Sciences, Technologies, Santé

The “Frontières de l’Innovation en Recherche et Éducation” (FIRE) PhD program, established in 2006, is part of the “Programme Bettencourt” created and funded by the Bettencourt-Schueller Foundation to help creative and talented students develop their PhD in an environment as enriching as those of the best graduate programs in the world. It is one of the 21 doctoral schools hosted at Université de Paris. The disciplines covered by the doctoral school are broad and include natural sciences, engineering and technology, medical and health sciences, and social sciences.

The aim of this interdisciplinary doctoral school is to promote ambitious research projects involving interactions between a wide range of academic disciplines in the pursuit of understanding living systems, education, and discovery. Thus, the FIRE graduate school recruits students trained in various disciplines (e.g. biology, physics, medicine, economy, linguistics) from around the world.

A number of research aims are associated to the FIRE doctoral school due the interdisciplinary nature of the program. They can be broadly categorized into two main tracks: Life Sciences(“Frontières du Vivant” – FdV) and Learning and Digital Sciences (“Frontières de l’Apprendre et du Numérique” – FAN).

    Conditions d'admission

Students admitted to the FIRE PhD program have a strong background in at least one of the disciplines relevant to their research project, demonstrate the quality and originality of the research project in view of its interdisciplinary, and show a proven interest in interdisciplinarity and the FIRE PhD program.

The FIRE PhD program is supported by many institutions that offer fellowships to the top-ranked students. This include fellowships from the Universities (doctoral contracts), the regions, and some foundations. Since the doctoral school will not be able to support all the eligible candidates (around 10 out of the 30 students admitted every year), students and their supervisors are encouraged to apply independently to funding available from other institutions, to insure the eligible candidate to be admitted in the FIRE program.

Language: English unless all the participants are French speakers.
